We overlook the beautiful Cape Cod National Seashore Dunes. Passes can only be purchased at these beaches and are not sold at park visitor centers. You’ll find breakfast sandwiches over the Sagamore bridge in Sandwich (yes, this is a real place), spots to inhale clams in Hyannis and Brewster as you head east on Route 6, extraordinary lobster at the very tip of the Upper Cape, and lots of frozen drinks in between. The six national seashore beaches where fees are collected are: Coast Guard and Nauset Light in Eastham, Marconi in Wellfleet, Head of the Meadow in Truro, and Race Point and Herring Cove in Provincetown. The purpose of this map is to show the major routes to the seashore. Depressions in the outwash plain are called kettle holes. This guide has all of that and more, organized by town. Kettle ponds are scattered across the outer Cape Cod landscape, an area consisting of glacial outwash plains that formed during the retreat of the Laurentide ice sheet some 18,000 years ago. There are also amazing fine dining restaurants that serve French food and fancy preparations of things that come from the sea, along with some great cafes where you can get a casual sandwich or burger right after you hit the beach. Gifts shops are located inside both Visitor Centers, as well as a small shop at Highland Light, but there are no dining facilities on either property. That’s not to say you have to resign yourself to fried mollusks for a straight week. Sure, people go to the Cape for the beaches, but what really makes this the ultimate New England summer destination is the seafood: hot lobster rolls overflowing with meaty knuckle meat, fresh Wellfleet oysters on the half shell, or fried clams and tartar sauce that somehow taste even better on a picnic bench in the sand. ![]()
